Major UK Food Retailer - WAN and LAN exchange over 2500 sites nationwide
Project Overview
In a monumental undertaking, Gentium Tech spearheaded a comprehensive upgrade of WAN and LAN infrastructure across 2500 stores worldwide. With meticulous planning and strategic execution, we aimed to enhance network reliability and performance while ensuring minimal disruption to store operations.
The WAN project focused on exchanging routers in 2500 stores during closure, decommissioning and replacing Juniper routing equipment. Each deployment was led by CCNA-certified engineers, supported by Gentium’s in-house team of lead engineers providing remote assistance. This collaborative approach ensured smooth deinstallation, installation, and migration processes, minimising potential disruptions.
Achievements
To date, over 1500 stores have successfully completed router exchanges, with plans to complete the remaining 1000 by the end of 2023. Meanwhile, the LAN component involved installing Juniper access points and switches in 2000 stores across the UK. Tailored to each store's unique requirements, installations ranged from 4 to 40 access points per store, with engineers certified in IPAF for working at heights exceeding 11 meters. Over 500 sites have been deployed, with 1500 more slated for completion by the end of 2023.
Project Management
With the complexity of a national rollout, Gentium demonstrated its agility by upscaling engineer numbers from 10 to 50 on short notice, including out-of-hours and weekend deployments. Our Project Management Office (PMO) worked closely with clients to ensure seamless installations. Detailed digital reports provided via Gentium’s AP tracked progress and addressed potential issues requiring remote troubleshooting during and after installation.
