Shipyard Crane Operations: Sierra Wireless XR90 Vehicle Router in Bergen, Norway

Project Overview

The project aimed to revolutionise shipyard crane operations in Bergen, Norway, by tackling the challenge of seamless communication between crane operators and the control centre, situated 17km away. Traditional communication methods proved insufficient for transmitting vital video and telematics data in real-time, hindering operational efficiency.

Achievements

Through thorough planning and execution, our team successfully implemented mobile wireless systems powered by the Sierra Wireless XR90 Vehicle Router onto shipyard cranes. This cutting-edge solution enabled remote monitoring of crane operations in real-time, providing comprehensive insights into performance. Operators gained the ability to make informed decisions instantly, leading to optimised operations and improved safety standards.

Challenges

Faced

The project encountered significant challenges, including ensuring reliable connectivity over the 17km distance between shipyard cranes and the control centre. Integrating wireless technology into existing crane infrastructure posed technical complexities, requiring expertise in both wireless communication and crane engineering. Logistical constraints, such as coordinating transportation and navigating site-specific restrictions, added further complexity. Compatibility and interoperability between new and existing systems demanded strict attention to detail and rigorous testing. Despite these hurdles, our team remained committed to delivering a successful project.

Solution

To tackle these challenges, we utilised the advanced capabilities of the XR90 router, renowned for its robust performance and 5G connectivity. By harnessing the crane's existing power source, we seamlessly integrated wireless modules, facilitating the transmission of vital data to the control centre. This innovative solution not only enhanced communication between operators but also optimised processes, improving efficiency throughout the shipyard.
